FROM THE Blue Ridge Mountains to the deep blue sea, Southerners are captivated by this color. In 2014, South Carolina artist Caroline Harper was too. “I had this dream to visit Japan and learn a technique called shibori, which is like tie-dye,” says Harper, who lives in Columbia. “That landed me on a silk and indigo farm outside Tokyo. From then on, I was hooked on fabric design—mostly on indigo.” Coincidentally, the natural dyes had a long history in her adopted home state (Harper is originally from France). First introduced here in the late 1600s, indigo was once one of South Carolina’s biggest cash crops. rainbow chard

It’s hard not to smile when you spot a bunch of rainbow chard with its emerald leaves and candy-colored stems. That’s why it’s odd that this vibrant, vitamin-packed vegetable isn’t as popular as collards or kale. The tender leaves cook as quickly as spinach but retain more texture, so they don’t wilt as much in the pan. The crunchy stems are tasty too. Quick Skillet Chard Remove stems from 1 lb. rainbow Swiss chard; chop into 1-inch pieces. Tear chard leaves into bite-size pieces. Heat 2 Tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil in a skillet over medium-high. “I WAS ALWAYS very creative as a child,” says painter and mixed-media artist Marianne Angeli Rodriguez (@marianneangelirodriguez). “My first dedication to making art was for my dad, who traveled a lot for work.
