coming of age

This month we celebrate our 18th anniversary. And, just like what the age personifies, we are no longer teens but have become certified adults. The past years have been great learning curves, and we have produced some of our best works. But as the tide of publishing moves forward, we ride the crest towards bigger and better things. We can’t imagine being here for this long. We still get excited seeing our vision for each month come to reality. Thank you to the entire Tatler team, from editorial, circulation, digital, and so on, as well as to the amazing contributors. Special mention goes to Yen Hilahan (art director) and Lennie Ondra (production manager) who have been with me in this magazine since day one. To our lifeblood, the advertisers, thank you for…

in the company of women

On a summer afternoon, our cover subject Maricris Cardenas-Zobel warmly welcomed the Philippine Tatler team to her home. It was a two-day shoot, first with photographer Patrick Diokno and the second, with Mark Nicdao. The former model’s home has a Balinese vibe with its resort-inspired garden, complete with a pond filled with mini koi as well as tropical flowers and greenery surrounding the pool. This tropical Eden served as the backdrop for our shoot. This is Maricris’ favourite spot in her home; she shared in the interview that whenever her children are looking for her, they go straight to the garden where she is often found happily tending to her plants. Her daughters—Bianca, Paola, Natalia, and Rocio—conversed freely with the team while getting their hair and make-up done, while Maricris’ five grandchildren…

Wig Tysmans This master lensman captured the minimalist charm of the house in “Modern Superior” (p. 920) I AM HIGHLY MOTIVATED WHEN I’M… Involved in a new project that requires me to do creative conceptional photography. DO YOU REMEMBER HOW YOU CELEBRATED YOUR 18TH BIRTHDAY? It must have been quite insignificant because I was, most likely, too dead drunk to remember anything! WHAT’S THE MOST MEMORABLE GIFT YOU HAVE EVER RECEIVED? The first inheritance from my parents when my wife and I got married. WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE SHOOT FOR PT? My favourite was the “Men in Black” shoot with former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. A MESSAGE FOR PT’S 18TH ANNIVERSARY Congratulations and I’m looking forward to more collaborations with you. Sara Black This Manila-based photographer, who’s ultra athletic too, shot some fun and playful images for “It’s Our Birthday” (p. 1986) I AM HIGHLY…

paalam, pilipinas

People knew it was coming, but it was still a surprise to many when the announcement was made that Ambassador Sung Kim of the United States had come to the end of his tour of duty in the country and that Washington had already primed him on his next assignment. Since he arrived in late 2016, Ambassador Kim has been a welcome guest at many society gatherings here in the Philippines, and his presence has graced the Philippine Tatler Ball over the past few years. Likewise, the current political climate notwithstanding, he has constantly made a point of keeping relations between the Philippines and the United States strong and cordial. Speculation has been rife regarding his potential successor, and it was even rumoured that the post would soon be occupied by the…
