welcome

“Few places in this world are more dangerous than home. Fear not, therefore, to try the mountain passes. They will kill care, save you from deadly apathy, set you free, and call forth every faculty into vigorous, enthusiastic action.”– John Muir (1838-1914) Many consider the Scottish-American John Muir to be the father of national parks. He was an early advocate for preserving wilderness areas in the United States, and helped ensure places like Yosemite were kept relatively pristine for future generations. He was a botanist, zoologist and environmental philosopher. Importantly, he was a vocal campaigner for getting people away from their money-making routines and into the mountains for rest and inspiration. We also have people like Paul Kruger to thank. Back in 1898, seeing the devastation wrought in the Lowveld by excessive…

bt-50: a new soul in motion

Mazda Southern Africa is poised to launch its third-generation BT-50 locally. Unlike the second generation which was based on the Ford Ranger and used the 3.2-litre five-cylinder mill, the latest iteration will borrow a platform and drivetrains from Isuzu’s upcoming D-Max, and will arrive as a full import built in Thailand. The new D-Max will only be released in 2022, after being given a series of engineering tweaks to give it a distinct South African identity, Meanwhile, the Mazda has been given an attractive reskin using Mazda’s Kodo, or “Soul of Motion” design principles, and with its sleek new front end and crisp shoulder lines, it has taken an aesthetic leap ahead of the predecessor. The interior look and feel signals another major leap, with a redesigned dash, console, seats and steering…

toyota’s lc300 almost here

More details have emerged about the Land Cruiser 300, following a premiere on YouTube early in June. The local introduction is still officially set for August, when the final images of the flagship GR Sport model, and pricing, will be made public. What we do know is that the LC300 will be the first to be built on an all-new TNGA-F platform, short for Toyota New Global Architecture, with the “F” for a wide spectrum of body-on-frame models. This platform promises to offer greater torsional rigidity and to be significantly lighter than the previous ladder frame. The exterior signals a new design direction for Toyota’s largest off-roader, with larger horizontal grille lines up front, a U-shaped radiator opening as part of the cliff-face front, triple-LED headlamps and trapezoidal LED tail lamps. That said,…

caring for your home away from home

I am a regular camper and take good care of my equipment, yet I experienced some damage recently after storing a rooftop tent outside my garage. It became infested with rats and was completely destroyed. This made me think about the best ways to care for your home away from home, when at home. Post trip care Before storing your camper, you need to think about your most recent trips. Did they include wading through water or deep mud? If so, it may be a good time to have the wheel bearings inspected as water may have seeped past the seals and got into the bearings. Storing the camper in this state means that you will most likely have an expensive repair bill when you use it again. You may even have…

basic tent care and maintenance

Proper tent care begins on the day of purchase. It is hard to argue with the fact that a well-loved and cared-for tent can make the difference between a night to remember and a night to forget. Care before you go After purchasing the tent that suits both your needs and pocket, you need to know how it works before taking it on a trip. Whether you have gone for a hardy canvas frame or dome tent, or opted for a lighter, more compact nylon tent, most of the same rules apply. You should fully pitch your tent at home using the pitching guide instructions provided. This helps you to know how to pitch the tent, even under difficult conditions, and you can make sure that all the parts are complete. You might…
