Take a minute and think of the houses you grew up in. Whether or not those spaces still exist, I’ll bet you can picture dozens of details about the rooms: where the armchairs were, where the TV stood, what the floor lamp looked like, even what knickknack or book was on what shelf. In most people’s houses, things tend to find a place and stay there for years—if not decades. Why does this happen? Maybe we like the continuity of a certain arrangement of furniture and objects, or maybe we stop seeing our belongings during the comings and goings of our everyday lives. My house is no different. I tend to leave things where I first put them. A houseplant in that corner. This side table with this lamp and this…

SATURATED COLORS can be as relaxing as muted ones, according to interior designer Gary McBournie. “The richness gives me the feeling of a nest,” he says. To keep a strong brown from overwhelming his Boston bedroom, McBournie contrasted it with white furnishings that catch the eye and used midtones like tan and gold to transition between the hues. Accessorizing with one vivid color, like this burnt orange or a hot pink, finishes the room.…

1 CLOSE QUARTERS Because of the room’s small footprint, Grace Mitchell had to be clever when picking and placing furniture. Her trick for saving floor space? Choosing pieces that go up rather than out. Tall, shallow shelving units flanking a petite campaign-style desk take advantage of the 9-foot ceilings. Plus, putting the office furniture along one wall preserves the guest room feel. 2 GLAM REHAB “I wanted a space that was light and bright, that I would feel inspired in,” Grace says. So she gave the shelving units a makeover with coats of white lacquer on the shelves and gold leaf on the framework. To quickly update the desk, Grace added brass hardware and a vinyl top embossed with an alligator-skin pattern. Vintage typewriters and leopard-print lampshades add retro glitz. 3 PRETTY STORAGE So guests…
