When I’m in an airport, I do what most people do. I scramble through security removing belt, shoes, liquids, metal objects, and laptop, trying to get through as quickly as I can with the least amount of hassle possible. When I arrive at the gate, I feel like I’ve run a gauntlet. I collapse in a seat and stare at my phone, avoiding eye contact with anyone else. HALF HITCH GOODS San Francisco In 2012 Carrie Caillouette was traveling the country in a 1980s VW Vanagon transporter, collecting linens, jewelry, and other unique gift items from small-batch makers to post on her online shop. A former buyer for Williams-Sonoma, Carrie loved the process of curating a collection of goods that would resonate with customers, but she also wanted a physical venue to share her finds. “I realized I needed a real presence, where people could come and touch everything and make a connection with an item,” she says. A traditional storefront was cost-prohibitive in her San Francisco home base, but she had another idea in mind: She was already using the Vanagon to collect her stock, so why not turn it into a store?
