Fresh takes on tradition In my family—as in most—our holiday celebrations are grounded in tradition, yet freshened up now and then to reflect who we are and where life stands at the moment. Last year, for example, I conceded that our traditional family tree-trimming evening is no longer practical now that my daughters, Sarah and Ellen, are grown and have their own homes. Instead, inspired by the kids’ interest in paper crafting, we decided to set aside a second, smaller tree for last-minute embellishment. When the family gathered on the day before Christmas, we spent two hours around the dining room table making ornaments out of decorative papers and snippets of the previous year’s Christmas cards. Admittedly, the tree was not picture-perfect in the end, but the conversation and fun were entirely…

SPARKLE TIME Make it the hap-happiest season of all with tiny twists on your traditional celebrations. Why not make gift packages part of your holiday decor? Perch colorfully wrapped boxes anyplace you want a bit of merry and bright. Jingle All the Way Ring in the season with a holiday party that’s as easy as 1-2-3. One great drink, a pretty bunch of flowers, and a belle-of-the-ball decoration. COOL COCKTAIL A signature drink makes the party special—and easy. In a large pitcher (to serve eight), mix 2 cups ruby red grapefruit juice and 1 cup chilled tangerine- or clementine-flavored vodka; slowly stir in a 750-ml bottle of chilled pink Prosecco. Rub the rims of cocktail glasses with an orange wedge and dip lightly in a mix of coarse colored sugar. Or use flutes accompanied by rock…

MOMENTS TO MAKE AND THINGS TO DO The percentage of candy canes bought in the month before Christmas. Event designer Mark Addison loves this twist: “Dip the ends in melted chocolate and let them set. Instant coffee stirrers!” Twice as nice The beauty of these MarieChavez beaded bracelets is what you don’t see: 25 percent of gross proceeds benefit a charity. Each of the 10 colors corresponds to a different organization—red in support of V-Day (which works to end violence against women and girls), gold for the Fisher House Foundation (supporting military families), black for Little Kids Rock (dedicated to public music education). And they come in a bunch of styles, so chances are good you’ll find a cause —and a look—that’s meaningful to you. $10 each; chavezforcharity.com A gifty idea Psst, can you keep…

SIMPLE JOYS All through the house—from the front door to the mantel to the tabletop—beautiful holiday touches abound. And more important, the holiday spirit is in hearts young and old. Low-key fun tops the Christmas wish list (and reflects the everyday decor) of this family. For them, getting crafty and just kicking back is merriment enough. December is a flurry of pom-poms, paints, and glue in Way Way Allen’s home. She and her two boys, ages 6 and 3, go to town on paper plates and cardboard, turning them into tree toppers and ornaments. Way Way (a longtime family nickname), is an artist and savors the together time from their crafting marathon as much as the art that comes from it. “A memory is made with each decoration,” she says. “It’s so fun…
