i am so delighted…

…to mark a special moment in publishing by paying tribute to an extraordinary woman who has not only helped define this magazine over the past 26 years, but British style around the world. May’s three Kate Moss covers mark the 40th month that the model, cultural icon and shimmering national treasure has fronted British Vogue. I almost can’t believe I’m writing that number down. Forty. When you think about it, the sums are really something. In total, Kate has spent more than three years of her life on the cover of this magazine. In 2000 alone, she fronted February, May, September and December. She’s been captured in all guises, starting with her first appearance in March 1993, photographed by the late Corinne Day, heralding the arrival of the new waif –…

second to none

The first time I met Karl was in 1998, at a dinner in Milan hosted by my boss Franca Sozzani, then editor-in-chief of Italian Vogue. I arrived with the model Alek Wek, who Karl loved, and she walked me over to him and introduced us. I was utterly in awe, completely star-struck. Some years later, I started working at W magazine. The editor, Stefano Tonchi, was very close to Karl, and together Stefano and I would go to the Chanel studio, where Karl would talk us through his collections before he presented them on the runway at the Grand Palais. It was during these previews that you really witnessed the magic; where you saw him at his best. Usually at appointments such as this the models aren’t made up, but at…

a new dynasty

This spring, everyone from Balenciaga to Saint Laurent is championing an after-dark policy of excess. Ritzy sparkles, overblown sleeves and daringly short hemlines meet in the irresistible spirit of unabashed glamour. While the look might nod to nostalgia, don’t take a wholeheartedly throwback approach: switch out big hair for a slicked-back style, add an unexpected choker to your statement-earring scenario, and keep make-up to a minimum. Sometimes, that “more is more” maxim can feel a tad… de trop. OS…
