The Hamptons, a renowned collection of seaside communities on Long Island in the US, has long been a haven for affluent New Yorkers and the distinctive homes that predominate, a source of architectural and design inspiration around the world. Nowhere has this style taken root as deeply as it has in Australia. Typified by large, light-filled living spaces, the use of rustic materials, coastal and classic design details, and elegant accessories, it’s a style that is just as well suited to the suburbs as it is a coastal or country setting. A traditional Hamptons interior is easy to identify. Just look for detailed architraves and skirting boards, cornices, wainscot panelling, a timber staircase and plantation shutters.
