My first car was a VW Citi Golf Citi.com 1,4i: the special edition with the bucket seats, 14-inch alloy wheels and golf-ball gearknob. I vividly remember the day I got it; I was in grade 12. We were returning from a rugby game by bus. As we pulled up to my high school’s entrance, I spotted my dad next to a dark blue Citi Golf. I must have shoved a few players out of the way to get off that bus because, within seconds, I had the key in my hands (if I did and you’re reading this, sorry I was a brat but you were between me and the moment I’d been dreaming about). My dad’s face beamed but, if memory serves, his smile quickly faded as I slid…

EV ISSUES Just about every motoring magazine across the globe has enthused about EVs for some time. In particular, car manufacturers have promised to satisfy public demand for vehicles driven by clean energy. However, the reality is not in sync with the overwhelming clamour for EVs from the authorities. Journalists, almost without exception, have been indulging in theoretics and yet it is clear the praxis does not follow. Little urban commuters might be fine if you recharge them at home but South Africa is a big country and we love the outdoors. This means long trips. The charging infrastructure is still non-existent and I can just imagine seeing long rows of impatient drivers at charging stations, waiting to recharge their vehicles over a minimum of 20 minutes and a lot more in…

OVER TO YOU... Please include your physical address and telephone number. Diverse ideas and opinions are welcome but publication of your letter doesn’t necessarily mean we agree. Please stick to a maximum of 300 words. CAR reserves the right to edit and shorten letters owing to space constraints. MISSING FIGURES Kindly reflect the sales of cars and LCVs each month. I know they are available from Naamsa. I believe some manufacturers refuse to reflect their monthly sales; do you perhaps know the reason? I have been reading CAR since 1969 and occasionally I mail a few copies to my son-in-law in Villafranca in Spain. He reads your magazine and says it is the best in the world. ANDRE GREYLING By email [Andre, a while back we decided to stop publishing sales figures in the magazine for the…

EYES EVERYWHERE The Vision-S is studded with a bewildering array of sensors, inside and out. A total of 33 CMOS digital image sensors help the car create a precise 3D spatial model of its surroundings but also create a matrix within which occupants can interact with the car using a wide array of gesture controls. This is complemented by a solid-state LiDAR system that vastly improves obstacle recognition in challenging conditions such as fog and glare. ALL-WHEEL OOMPH Sony has kept information surrounding the car’s drivetrain and performance light, with details extending only as far as a platform with a floor integrated lithium-ion battery array feeding 200 kW electric motors on the front and rear axles. Performance is impressive; this system propels the 2 350 kg car to 100 km/h in less than…

flat-six appeal

ETA: Q2 Although the four-cylinder units in the 718 Boxster and Cayman are strong performers in their own right, Porsche purists have been clamouring for the return of the firm’s charismatic flat-six engine. Enter the 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 and Boxster GTS 4.0. As the nomenclature indicates, both are powered by a detuned version of the naturally aspirated 4,0-litre six-cylinder boxer engine from the GT4/Spyder. Best of all, the mid-mounted engine can be coupled with a six-speed manual transmission. Porsche Active Suspension Management system, Sports Chrono pack and limited-slip rear differential are included in both GTS models. Engine: 4,0-litre, flat-6, petrol Power: 294 kW Torque: 420 N.m 0-100 km/h: 4,5 seconds Top speed: 293 km/h…

sunny side up

ETA: Q2 Stepping out in style, Mini’s special-edition Sidewalk Convertible ushers in such styling touches as Deep Laguna metallic blue paintwork (White Silver and Thunder Grey are alternatives), model-specific bonnet stripes, 17-inch scissor-spoke alloy wheels and a canvas roof with a woven-in arrow motif. The cabin receives “Sidewalk” decals on the aluminium sill plates and leather upholstery with contrasting green and yellow piping. Two turbopetrol engine options will be on offer: the 100 kW 1,5-litre three-cylinder and 2,0-litre four-cylinder with 141 kW, both of which will be coupled with a seven-speed dual-clutch auto transmission.…
