ASPIRING JOURNALIST I am a 22-year-old living in a rural part of Limpopo. I like to read and watch car reviews and this developed into a tendency of doing mini car reviews in my mind with every car I get into. I also preach the gospel of cars (if there is such a thing) to my peers. CAR magazine influenced this as it all began back in 2012 when a friend gave me the February 2011 issue. BUILT IN BRAZIL The body-on-frame SUV retails for R$167 560 (±R580 000) and is available exclusively in the South American country, where it is produced in the Troller assembly line in Horizonte, Ceará. Ford Motor Company acquired the Brazilian 4x4 maker in 2007. Various advanced techniques were applied to the manufacturing process: 3D printing helped speed up the production of prototype models, while virtual reality software was used to test the vehicle’s ergonomics. Before the start of production, new investments were made in the factory and employees underwent 14 000 hours of training. Dressed in livery resembling that of the 2019 Pikes Peak record-breaking Bentley Continental GT, the Crewe automaker’s GP Ice Race car makes do with the same powertrain, supported by a 48 V mild-hybrid setup. However, in this application, the grand-tourer turned ice-racer has been upgraded – specifically for track use in sub-zero temperatures – with increased ground clearance and stance; Sparco bucket seats, replete with racing harnesses; a part-roll cage; and studded Pirelli Scorpion Ice Zero 2 tyres to ensure it’s rally ready.
