Two years ago, I wrote my first letter as editor of CAR. Twenty-three issues later and this is my goodbye to you (the tally would have been an appealing double dozen if it wasn’t for COVID-19 forcing a May/June compilation, but what can you do?). It’s been a dream come true helming one of South Africa’s great media titles and an experience I’ll cherish. How many people can say that? Of course, it would have been impossible to maintain CAR’s lofty standards without a dedicated, opinionated (much to my occasional chagrin) team, and I want to doff my cap to editorial guys Ian, Gareth, Peter, Nicol, Ryan, Wilhelm, Nikesh, Marius and Jarryd for meeting deadlines with imaginative copy, rising long before the sun for shoots (by talented photographer Peet), missing birthdays…

FOND FIAT FLASHBACKS It was October 1980 and matric exams were looming. Living 12 km outside Kimberley, reliable transport was paramount. Just R700 later (sponsored by mom), I was the proud owner of a 1972 Fiat 125 Special with 140 000 km on the clock and fitted with Smith’s California deep rims. Like the Alfas of the era, it was ahead of its time, with disc brakes on all four wheels, a five-speed gearbox and 75 kW from the 1,6-litre twin-cam motor. After exams, the Fiat ran like clockwork on its first road trip to Cape Town. Conscription to the SANDF followed and it took us everywhere, including Potchefstroom, Pretoria and Lohatla. IN FOR A SHOCK I have read the various articles and letters on this issue with bemusement as well as amusement. All people are entitled to their own views but I really cannot agree with Guy Dormehl (Electrified future, July 2020) on this topic. Personally, I have no issue with electric cars. However, I feel they are really only suited to urban areas. The issue forcing manufacturers (primarily in Europe) to offer electric vehicles are the increasingly stringent EU emissions regulations, which get tightened each year. That is also the reason for offering smaller-capacity turbopetrol engines which I also have my doubts about their lifespan. In small European countries, this is fine, but in larger countries such as the United States, Australia, Russia and South Africa … not so much. Although there are…

Underpinned by a ladder-frame chassis, the Bronco can now be had in two- and (for the first time) four-door guises, with a maximum ground clearance of 295 mm when 35-inch rubber is specified. Power comes from either a 203 kW/ 420 N.m 2,3-litre EcoBoost four or 2,7-litre V6, the latter sending 231 kW and 542 N.m to a solid rear axle and independent front diff via a Getrag-sourced seven-speed manual or 10-speed auto. Adding to its off-road capability, up to seven driving modes – including Baja – can be activated through the centre-console-sited G.O.A.T. selector.
