We last used the latex (scratch-off) foil treatment back in issue 259 (November 2016) with Sawdust’s epic (and much-loved) Top 30 UK Studios cover. The treatment is simple to execute (it’s just a foil) and huge fun, but it needs a sound editorial reason to be deployed. Teasing readers over the content of Tom May’s great cover feature was too good an opportunity to ignore. We know (hoped?) that the gigantic question mark would stand out from a distance, and that once the magazine was picked up, it would be difficult to resist scratching off some of the panels to find the hidden text beneath. The graduation season is upon us, and with it some pretty monumental questions for graduates to be pondering, and potentially not a lot of answers close at hand. You’ve packed up your end-of-year show, but what next? It can feel daunting, scary even. The truth is everyone faces awkward questions – of their situation and their abilities. My editor’s letter is often (always) the very last thing I write before the magazine goes to print. solutions for a man-made mess

Designers and artists from across the creative community have collaborated on a digital exhibition tackling two of the biggest issues we face: the climate crisis and gender inequality. Man Made-Disaster: Patriarchy & The Planet can be viewed online and contains imagery and information that will blow you away. The site was created by Do the Green Thing, an environmentally focused project led by Pentagram partner Naresh Ramchandani, and the New York design agency Area 17. All the artworks were created either by women or non-binary artists – 30 in total – and the site’s bold design sandwiches the artists’ names and the exhibition’s themes, which scroll across the screen like a Wall Street ticker.
