the mood of the moment: embracing change

There’s nothing like a pandemic to focus the mind on what’s important in life. I found myself reconnecting with old friends and reassessing my career goals. Interior designer Francesca Rowan Plowden realised that she could use her skills to benefit stressed-out NHS staff, which led to a new charity project, Design Havens for Heroes. Change can be exciting and terrifying in equal measure, but we hope you’ll find comfort and escapism in this issue, which is full of beautiful homes to drool over and ideas for mini projects to keep you moving forward. P.S. Have you found us on Instagram, yet? Follow @countryhomesmag to get a sneak peek at beautiful homes and…

“WE’RE BOTH COLLECTORS BUT LUKE IS MORE INTO GRITTY SALVAGE ITEMS AND I ERR TOWARDS A MORE NOSTALGIC LOOK. IT’S A GOOD COMBINATION ” Leanne Chandler’s converted barn and stables lie at the end of a sun-dappled lane in the Kent countryside; a setting that is quintessentially English. Yet, inside, she has combined all she loves about vintage style with decorative twists that originate further from home. ‘A lot of my inspiration is from a family trip we took just before we embarked on this renovation,’ she says. The family spent two months travelling around Asia, Australia and New Zealand, where Leanne soaked up plenty of ideas to bring back. This long, timber-clad building was forged from three outbuildings – a barn, some stables and two garages – that came with a…

faded glory

Sylvie and Pierre Delcroix fell in love with this 17th-century Normandy barn at their first viewing and decided to buy it on the spot. The couple were immediately struck by the vast, lofty spaces inside the converted barn, as well as its tree-filled, secluded garden. ‘There was a soothing quality to the house and landscape that I craved,’ says Sylvie. ‘I also love this corner of Calvados, close to the small town of Meulles, as I spent much of my childhood not far from here with my grandmother and cousins in an old building she renovated.’ “I SCOURED LOCAL ANTIQUES…
