get me to the greek

CRUMBLING colonnades dedicated to mystical gods, olive groves, azure waters, super-long summers and souvlaki and tzatziki still hold an irresistible draw—since 2012, Greece has doubled its tourist numbers to 30 million, with a historic high last year of € 503 million investment from foreign buyers. The Peloponnese, an unspoilt southern peninsula connected to the mainland by the isthmus of Corinth, is rising to the challenge. Demand is increasing and, following in the footsteps of the likes of Amanzoe, a new collection of branded residences has been launched at the Westin Resort on the Costa Navarino, with its two 18-hole golf courses, countless restaurants and spa.True to branded-residence form, buyers of the apartments—some of which have infinity-edge swimming pools and direct access to the private beach—will be able to visit for…

you can take a horse to water...

LAST month, acclaimed British sculptor Nic Fiddian-Green commandeered La Serenissima’s Grand Canal by floating his spectacular Copper Horse down it, all the way to the Madonna dell’Orto. The exhibition of his sculptures in bronze, gold, marble, copper and lead, as well as charcoal works on paper, remains at the Gothic church, often called ‘the best-kept secret in Venice’, until July 31. The sculptor explains his work: ‘Ever since I saw the horse of Selene, one of the Elgin Marbles, as a student, I have followed this lifelong obsession of sculpting the horse’s head and I have been fascinated by man’s relationship with the horse over the centuries. Part of the exhibition for me is the journey and travelling with horses as generations have done, from my studio in England,…

bella toscana

THINK of the Renaissance, rolling vineyards and Chianti, and Tuscany probably springs to mind. Among ancient olive trees in the Monte Argentario nature reserve, a scenic 90-minute drive from Rome Fiumicino airport, the five-star Argentario Golf Resort & Spa has launched a collection of villas that make Tuscany feel private once more. There are five for sale, with interiors by Milan-based Andrea Fogli (although layout and furnishings can be customised) and more are due to be released over the next few years. Each comes with the use of golf buggies, the on-site wellness centre, the 18-hole PGA golf course and the heliport and owners can leave it to the resort to organise lets in their absence. Two five-bedroom hilltop lodges offer panoramic views of the Orbetello Lagoon, home to…

It’s been dubbed ‘the milk run’ or a ‘nautical passeggiata’ and the season kicks off with the Monaco Grand Prix (where the most prestigious berth is on the T-jetty by the start line) and runs through…

barcelona’s back

JAI-CA is heaving with people. The waiters dance around tiny tables, balancing cañas of foaming beer and plates heaped high with fried anchovies, whitebait and bombas, a rich ball of meat and potatoes. The cosmopolitan crowd spilling outside this busy tapas bar onto a corner of La Barceloneta, Barcelona’s seaside neighbourhood, is testament to the appeal of a city that’s regained its spot among Europe’s most sought-after destinations. After the low point of 2017, when a referendum on Catalan independence, deemed illegal by Spain’s Constitutional Court, ended in a police crackdown and a lull in international arrivals, Barcelona has bounced back. The economy is growing solidly and ‘we’ve seen an increase in enquiries and offers for prime properties since the middle of 2018,’ says Alexander Vaughan of Savills’ associates Lucas…
