For a magazine that specialises in travel, the Covid situation has been particularly frustrating. But if there is one silver lining it is that we have looked with fresh eyes at this beautiful country we live in. We may not have the Alps or the Dolomites, and our roads have not been made famous by the passing of Grand Tours, but the UK does have some of the most spectacular countryside anywhere in the world, and enough tough climbs to keep even the most masochistic KoM-bagger happy. That’s why we decided it was time we embarked on a project that would showcase the best this nation has to offer. For the Teammachine’s 10th birthday, BMC claims to have made the lightest and most aero version yet Now more than ever, race-level road bikes are an exercise in compromise. It’s no longer enough to juggle stiffness, weight and comfort – aerodynamics must be considered too. For BMC, finding the right balance has long since moved beyond the capabilities of physical modelling and testing. Consequently, since 2014 the Swiss brand has used computer modelling software, which it first used to develop the second-generation Teammachine. Since then, Mart Otten, BMC’s road bike product manager, estimates the brand has modelled around 37,000 Teammachine variations on its ‘ACE’ software. The Sidi Shot 2 quite literally has big shoes to fill. The original version of the Sidi Shot was the brand’s priciest offering, yet found as much favour with amateur riders as it did with WorldTour pros, so this latest version needs to promise something pretty special. Interestingly, rather than simply make a few tweaks to a popular shoe, Sidi has revealed some substantial changes for the Shot 2. While the dual Tecno-3 dial closure layout and TechPro microfibre upper remain unchanged, gone is the tendril-like design that covered the previous Shots. The new look is much cleaner and comes in several tasteful colour options. When it comes to updating mid-range helmets, Italian companies must think alike. Perhaps it’s due to how well protected their brains are. Hot on the heels of Kask’s updated Mojito (featured last issue), Met has redesigned its Rivale. The helmet sits below the bells-and-whistles Trenta and the aero-focussed Manta in Met’s range, and attempts to offer good levels of all-round performance at an accessible price. The new Rivale boasts better ventilation, according to Met, thanks to wider and longer front vents. These are paired with internal channelling to guide air across the rider’s scalp. While the details are hazy on the magnitude of improvement, Met claims the new Rivale is more aerodynamic too. Veloflex is a small Italian business with just 10 employees who make every tyre by hand, yet it has a formidable reputation for the quality of its tubulars, and now the brand is making tubeless clinchers that look equally impressive. Like its top-end tubulars, the Corsa Evo TLRs use Veloflex’s incredibly supple 320tpi carcass, only being a tubeless tyre this is impregnated with a latex membrane to make it airtight. Almost as much a joy to behold as to ride, the Grand Tour 1x chainset harks back to not just yesteryear but yester-century.
