ed’s letter

Spoke too soon. In last month’s Ed’s Letter I got all excited about the lifting of travel restrictions, just to discover that the only places on the ‘green list’ were the likes of Brunei and the Falkland Islands. Tempting as it is to plan a riding holiday on a windswept rock in the southern Atlantic just as it enters its coldest winter months, I have decided instead to get excited about something else: the impending Tour de France, which I confidently predict will be the greatest edition… ever. It has all the best elements of last year – two mega-teams in Ineos and Jumbo-Visma slugging it out like a cycling version of Godzilla vs King Kong – with the added twist of an in-form Tadej Pogačar returning to defend his title…

reaping reward

With so many variables to consider, manufacturing with carbon fibre composite is as much art as it is science. Experience counts for a great deal. Happily though, the knowledge of how to select, cut, schedule and cure the material is highly transferable from one industry to another, which means that although the Vekta is Reap’s debut road bike, the company was by no means starting from square one. I’ve been in composite engineering since 1987 and have had my own business since 1997,’ says Reap founder Martin Meir. ‘I’ve been doing triathlon since 1987 too, so I’d always dreamed of making my own bike. ‘In 2014 we had a disagreement with a large company and lost their contract. It caused me to stand back and realise I was tired of doing all…

gaerne carbon g.stl shoes

On Stage 12 of this year’s Giro d’Italia, AG2R-Citroën’s Andrea Vendrame managed to sprint clear of Australian Chris Hamilton to claim the biggest win of his career. The Italian might have been helped along by his Gaerne Carbon G.STL shoes, which have a carbon sole that ranks 12/12 on Gaerne’s stiffness index and are also extra light, with one size 43 shoe weighing in at a claimed 274g. Gaerne says each element of the Carbon G.STL shoes has been designed to increase pedalling efficiency. The carbon under the foot arch is shaped for improved stability, while there’s a supportive insole and an upper that wraps closely around the heel and instep. Boa Li2 dials offer precise adjustment, while four air vents ensure feet don’t overheat on sunny days or long climbs. Finally Gaerne…

wahoo elemnt bolt ii

Out of the box, the new Wahoo Elemnt Bolt II looks much the same as its predecessor, retaining the small size and aerodynamic shape that made this bike computer popular with road riders. But look closer and you’ll notice a change. The three buttons on the front were previously concave, which made them quite difficult to press, especially with gloves. Now these buttons are convex, protruding above the screen, making them much easier to use on the fly. Turn on the Bolt II and you’ll notice an even bigger change. The screen is now colour, and this is not the eight-colour screen of the larger Elemnt Roam bike computer but a 64-colour screen to offer incredible detail on maps and colour-coded zones on the training data pages. The new Bolt also…

velobici monti jersey

French-Italian by name, British-made by nature. Velobici has just released the star of its summer show, the Monti jersey. Made from a ‘revolutionary lightweight performance fabric’, or in other words a high-stretch yarn knitted in a honeycomb-like way, the Monti is designed to increase surface area and thereby improve moisture-wicking and temperature regulation on hot days. Pairing up with the jersey are Velobici’s Monti bibshorts (£190), whose compressive weave is designed to promote muscle support, while a ‘bioceramic’ seat pad boasts ergonomic, antimicrobial properties.…

oakley kato sunglasses

It’s that time again. Oakley has released an opinion-splitting new pair of sunglasses that will almost certainly become a regular feature of Grand Tour pelotons. Named after the martial arts specialist sidekick from The Green Hornet comic books – once played by Bruce Lee in the TV version back in the 1960s – the Oakley Kato glasses are modelled on the character’s black mask. To get the mask look, Oakley removed all frames and replaced them with one giant Prizm lens that not only curves around the face but also smoothes around the nose. Oakley says the curvature is so the glasses will fit ‘as close to the face as possible’, to improve field of vision as well as providing impact protection. It will also help prevent sunburn on the top of…
