1) In an exclusive excerpt from her new memoir, We Have Always Been Here, Toronto-based SAMRA HABIB gets personal about discovering her sense of style as a teen (page 66). What trend is she shopping now? “I’m really enjoying high-waisted, widelegged pants,” she tells us. “There is something so timeless about them. I’m instantly reminded of Katharine Hepburn.” 2) Originally from São Paulo, Brazil, JULIANA SCHIAVINATTO has been working in fashion since she was a teen. But the Toronto-based stylist, who pulled together the looks for our “City Haul” shoot (page 92), still gets major thrills on set. “I loved it when the strong wind hit the soft, tailored fabrics on some of the looks and created beautiful silhouettes,” she says. “And it was amazing working with Mae Lapres for the…

editor’s note

THERE ARE some things that universally create anticipation. Browsing college applications and imagining a future on a leafy-green campus. The promise of unbridled productivity that comes with opening a crisp new notebook. The buzz that builds before the start of a road trip when you toss your bags into the trunk and slam it shut. Heading down an open highway, wind blowing through your hair, a trail of dust behind you… It’s an iconic image of liberation. No wonder the road-trip story is one told time and time again in books and on film. (Important note: I think that the most famous novel about this topic, On the Road, is wildly overrated. There, I’ve said it.) Long drives have always held an allure for me. When I was in grade school, my…

FIT FOR A QUEEN When we’re in Britain, we expect to be treated like royalty. That’s exactly what you get at The Franklin in London’s posh Knightsbridge neighbourhood. Our rec: Take a morning stroll through the hotel’s private gardens, head out for some shopping (Harrods is a hop away) and then unwind in the hammam spa before settling in for a nightcap at the on-site Gatsby-esque bar, which boasts seven types of champagne and 22 kinds of gin. Cheerio! DEGRASSI 2.0 Do we know very much about Euphoria, the new drama premiering on Crave on June 16? Not really. Does it matter? Again, not really, because what we do know—that it stars Zendaya (as one of a group of high schoolers navigating the messiness of life) and is executive-produced by Drake—guarantees we’ll be…

HANGING ON A WALL in the archives at Levi Strauss & Co.’s head office in San Francisco is a poster-size photo of denim-clad twentysomethings crammed together on a dairy farm in Bethel, N.Y., for a little festival that came to be known as Woodstock. “The joke is, you were either wearing blue jeans or you were naked,” says in-house archivist Laura O’Hara of the de facto dress code for the iconic ’69 music festival. Fifty years later, festival fashion hasn’t really changed. Denim cut-offs, jackets and jeans abound, both onstage—here’s looking at you, Beyoncé—and off. “Music chose Levi’s,” says Karyn Hillman, chief product officer for the brand at its annual pool party-cum-denim customization extravaganza (tie-dye, screen printing, embroidery) held during Coachella. “It symbolizes freedom and anti-establishment and a little rebellious…
