dino or 308 gtb?

FOR MANY ENTHUSIASTS just a few years older than myself, the Dino is the most beautiful small Ferrari ever made. I have some sympathy with this view, but the 308 GTB was the small Ferrari of my impressionable childhood and so can never be usurped. Driving one for this issue has only cemented its place, and this despite the difficult conditions that met us during the making of the cover story. The 308 was a fabulous introduction to the star-studded V8 line-up we assembled and I can’t thank owner Simon – and Sal, Andy and Mike – enough for bringing their cars along to rain-lashed Wales. Latest in the line of ‘junior’ supercars is the 488. I’ve been lucky enough to drive a few of its rivals, but none engages as…

portofino opens up

News, analysis and events ‘While it’s cast in a similar mould, it’s nevertheless a thorough evolution’ WHAT WAS IT ABOUT the California that confused journalists so much? Some loved it, some hated it, but many simply couldn’t make up their minds. No matter, the entry-level Ferrari has been very good business for the firm, the California and its turbocharged California T successor accounting for around 20-25 per cent of total Ferrari sales during their lifetimes. So while the press and some Ferrari enthusiasts had reservations, customers were in no doubt. With its recipe of a traditional front-engined, rear-wheel-drive layout, automatic gearbox, 2+2 accommodation and folding metal roof, the California was the kind of car that asked little of its owner but delivered plenty in return. Now Ferrari has launched its successor, the more…

ferraris on the fairways

FERRARI celebrated its 70th anniversary with a sea of red on both the first and 18th fairways at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. In a special display away from the concours itself, Ferrari displayed one car for each year of its history. Owned by a mixture of private individuals, museums and the company itself, the cars were valued at a staggering total of $500 million. Highlights included a 1960 250 GT SWB Competizione, 1967 275 GTS/4 NART Spyder, 2014 LaFerrari, a pair of 1962 GTOs and two 288 GTOs, all of these certified by Ferrari Classiche. Out on the 18th fairway, there were no fewer than four categories for Ferrari in the concours: one each for Grand Touring, Competition, Major Race Winners and One-Off Specials. A favourite for many was the…

the deadliest decade

IT WAS, TO BE BLUNT, carnage on the race circuits of the 1950s. Maybe there was still a bit of a wartime approach to the value of life and glory for your country, but everyone accepted the risks and races have never been as thrilling to watch. Between 1955 and 1959, Ferrari lost Peter Collins, Eugenio Castellotti, Luigi Musso and Alfonso de Portago. And, soon after he retired, Ferrari-driving world champion Mike Hawthorn was gone, too, hitting a tree on the A3. Ferrari: Race to Immortality, from Universal Studios, tells the story of those years through, literally, the lenses of the time and voiceovers both contemporary and retrospective. The archive footage, some of it from the vaults of the late Ferrari F1 driver and keen film buff Wolfgang von Trips and never…

cover for older cars

FERRARI HAS INTRODUCED ‘New Power15’, an evolution of its innovative extended warranty programme that was first rolled out in 2014. Under the original New Power scheme, you could buy a warranty covering major components for up to 12 years from the date the car was first registered. Now the package has been improved and the option has been extended to 15 years in a move to protect values as well as delivering peace of mind. New Ferraris in the UK come with a three-year factory warranty, which can be extended by two years. The New Power warranty was introduced to cover years six to 12, and the new offer will give owners the option of further cover for another three years for all the vehicle’s main mechanicals, from the engine and…
