  happy birthday, dino

IN THIS ISSUE we celebrate the 50th birthday of the Dino with a special collection of features, the centrepiece of which is a back-to-back drive of 206 and 246. The 206 is very rare, only 153 having been made, and for a while I thought we were hunting the snark: every time we got close to one, it would vanish. ‘Sorry; sold it a month ago, went to Japan…’ ‘We did have one, Lovely it was. Shipped it to Switzerland last week…’. Then a tip-off from a very well-connected specialist put us on the trail of another. The owner was willing, a date was agreed, and he began preparing the car. Boom. Back of the net. Two weeks later he called to say it wouldn’t be ready for a couple of…

wild thing! fxx k evo

IN 2014, AT THE YAS MARINA track in Abu Dhabi, ex-Ferrari F1 test driver and Le Mans winner Marc Gené spoke about the FXX K, the third car in the exclusive Ferrari XX Programme. He was amazed by the LaFerrari-based, 1036bhp track car. ‘I couldn’t believe that something so powerful was so driveable,’ he said. ‘I’ve only experienced that in F1 and LMP1; the FXX K is on that level, honestly.’ And he added: ‘For this reason, it would be very difficult to develop an FXX K Evo.’ Well, three years on, Ferrari has developed an Evo (Evoluzione) version of the track-only FXX K, and in January it showed it outside of Italy for the first time at the Autosport International show at the NEC, Birmingham. The Evo’s mechanical specification is…

  the xx programme

FXX (2005-2007) The first XX car, revealed at the Bologna motor show in 2005, was the Enzo-based FXX and the initial 20 clients who took up the factory’s offer paid ¤1.5m (plus taxes) for the 800bhp super-Enzo and access to a series of 14 exclusive track events. Unsurprisingly, the FXX also came with an advanced driving course at Fiorano as a warm-up to the track events, where the lucky clients were invited to provide feedback to the Ferrari technicians to help with development of future Ferraris. In all, just 29 FXXs were built and bought by clients, the 30th being presented by the factory to Michael Schumacher, who contributed his vast experience to the programme. Many of the cars were kept at the factory and shipped to the various scheduled events but…

488 series for uk?

FERRARI IS PLANNING a UK-based 488 Challenge race series for 2019. The series would be run to the same regulations as the Ferrari Challenge Europe series but would require only a National B racing licence. There are already a number of UK racers competing in the European series, which has three classes and runs over seven rounds: three in Italy and a round each in France, Hungary and the UK. The dedicated UK series, currently being evaluated by Ferrari’s Corse Clienti division, would give racers the opportunity to hone their skills and acquire the necessary experience and results to progress to an International C racing licence and to compete in Europe. Interested parties are encouraged to contact their local official Ferrari dealership; the plan is for the dealer network to sell the…

whale watching

THANKS TO OUR long lead-times, these words come to you from early January, just a few days after the excesses of Christmas and a few days before the start of another annual festival of conspicuous consumption: the Scottsdale auctions. Ordinarily at this point in the year, Scottsdale would have the undivided attention of the Ferrari community – and with good reason. Between the events held by Barrett-Jackson, RM Sotheby’s, Gooding & Co, Russo & Steele, Worldwide Auctioneers and Bonhams, no fewer than 112 Ferraris will be offered this time around. These are good cars, too: we’re especially keen on RM’s Ghia-bodied 212 Inter Coupé, shown by Ferrari at the 1952 Paris Salon and first owned by Juan Perón, the former president of Argentina – and better known, thanks to Andrew Lloyd-Webber and…

sharing the passion

THE FERRARI OWNERS’ CLUB of Great Britain is incredibly active, but many of the events that it puts on each year are accessible only to its members. However, there are a couple of particularly big ones that are open to all: the Classic Motor Show at the NEC in November and the Ferrari race weekend held at Silverstone. The latter usually takes place in September and is called Ferrari Racing Days, but for 2018 the action has been brought forward to April, with a revised format and a new name: Passione Ferrari. Both weekends are important to the club as they provide an opportunity to meet prospective new members, who in turn can see for themselves the wealth of cars within the club. At the recent NEC show, alongside the latest GTC4…
