all roads lead to ringo!

I’M ONE OF those rare people who like to find “a Ringo Starr angle” to every story. It’s a bit like “six degrees of Kevin Bacon” — but with Ringo Starr instead. Take this issue’s cover star, Peter Frampton. It’s widely known that Frampton played acoustic guitar on George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass album, which features Ringo on drums, so there’s a Ringo Starr angle. Frampton fans also will recall that Peter was an A-list member of Ringo’s All-Starr Band (along with Jack Bruce) in the late Nineties (another Ringo Starr angle!). It is, however, less widely known that Frampton played lead guitar on “A Dose of Rock ’N’ Roll,” a punchy little tune — and the lead-off single — from Starr’s pretty decent 1976 album, Ringo’s Rotogravure. Believe me,…

On the Road with Randy! I wanted to share a photo of the late, great Randy Rhoads. It was taken in 1981 in Karlsruhe, Germany, on the Blizzard of Oz tour. I was front row center and was mesmerized by Randy’s ability. Sorry for the poor quality, but it was taken with a 110 Instamatic camera with a built-in flash. Hope everyone enjoys it! —Dan Whelan 365 Days of Guitar Lessons A lot of the YouTube guitarists you mentioned in your “You-Tubers Tell All” feature [March 2019] are great, but I think you missed the best source of them all — Carl Brown of Guitarlessons365.com . He has hundreds of excellently edited videos for songs covering every genre under the sun, plus a kickass website that offers additional lessons. Guitar World and Carl are…

hurts so good

ALTHOUGH HE’S JUST 31, Julian Lage’s career has spanned more than two decades and has seen the virtuosic guitarist perform with artists ranging from Carlos Santana (when he was only 9) to Doc Watson to David Grisman. He’s also recorded with Wilco’s Nels Cline and the Punch Brothers’ Chris Eldridge and released albums in duo, trio, quartet and quintet configurations, as well as in solo acoustic format. And — to round things off —Lage is a current Guitar World columnist; you can find his latest lesson on page 98. His newest record, Love Hurts, finds Lage leading a trio rounded out by bassist Jorge Roeder and Bad Plus drummer Dave King, and, characteristic of his ever-curious musical mind, tackling an idiosyncratic collection of songs that, in addition to several originals, includes…

1 “Cross Off” Mark Morton ft. Chester Bennington This has the perfect balance of incredible guitar work and phenomenal melodic singing with aggressive tones. If only there were more songs like this. 2 “I Will Fail You” Demon Hunter One of my favorite songs right now. The lyrics are so meaningful, as are most DH songs. I relate to it — and the overall song is beautifully crafted. I love the melodies and chord progression. 3 “...And Justice for All” Metallica If I could describe this song in one word, it’d be epic. This ahead-of-its-time progthrash song is full of energy, thought-provoking lyrics and great guitar riffs, solos and vocals. Possibly my all-time favorite song. 4 “Arise” Sepultura The heaviest song ever released (in my opinion). Tuned in E standard, this is a skull-crushing song that’s perfect for driving. The adrenaline…
