swan song

This is my final issue as editor-in-chief of Harper’s Bazaar, and it feels fortunate that my farewell should be coinciding with the eighth annual Women of the Year Awards that I’ve overseen during my tenure. I came here in the knowledge that the legacy of Bazaar is far greater than any single one of its editors; for this is a title built on more than 150 years of visionary leadership. Generations of talented women have been at the heart of Bazaar’s success since its launch in 1867 (though men have played a vital role, too; one only needs to remember the extraordinary achievements of Alexey Brodovitch, the art director from 1934 to 1958, and of the photographers he discovered, most notably Richard Avedon). But I hope that in my time,…

HELENA BONHAM CARTER Page 174 ‘I don’t think I’ve ever been happier or more fulfilled,’ says the Bafta-winning actress of the latest chapter in her remarkably varied career. Since making her screen debut as a teenager, Bonham Carter has appeared in films ranging from Howards End to the Harry Potter franchise, and was awarded a CBE in 2011. In this issue, she tells Bazaar how a psychic helped her tackle the role of Princess Margaret in The Crown. Your ultimate female role model ‘I know it sounds as if I haven’t broken my umbilical cord, but it has to be my mother. When Shakespeare wrote of Cleopatra, “Age cannot wither her, nor custom stale/Her infinite variety”, he was really describing my mum.’ What sisterhood means to you ‘Female friendship is one of…

The rain-swept, bonfire-lit Palais Badi in Marrakesh provided an astonishingly photogenic backdrop for Dior’s cruise show – but Maria Grazia Chiuri also offered an outstandingly beautiful collection. Sometimes the location overwhelms the clothes, but not here: the designer used Africa as inspiration, offering bold pieces in toile du Jouy printed on the Ivory Coast by an atelier called Uniwax; she also collaborated with artists and designers, including Grace Wales Bonner, on reworked versions of house classics. This was a modern, multicultural Dior, showing that luxury can be truly global and encompassing. Brava. Guests arrived at Gucci’s cruise show to find a quote from the French historian Paul Veyne spray-painted on a wall hanging: ‘Because only Pagan antiquity could arouse my desire. Because it was the world of the past. Because it was a world that no longer exists.’ Alessandro Michele chose Rome’s Musei Capitolini – Italy’s oldest museum, laid out in a plan designed by Michelangelo in 1536 – as his location, with models winding through the ancient statues in darkness (literally – there was a torch on every seat to illuminate looks). What could be picked out was an elaborate, provocative play on politics, history and culture: from Mickey Mouse prints to embroidery on a jacket reading ‘My Body, My Choice’.
