days of promise

Change is in the air this month. Across the land, nature is throwing off her winter drab to bedeck herself in greens and golds, birds are bravely launching into parenthood, and the end of March will see even Time leap forward. Of course, change is not always easy or comfortable, as I have learnt to my own cost this year (my overambitious resolutions around daily exercise, meditation and clutter-clearing being early casualties); but it is almost always worth the effort. It is in celebration of such regeneration and renewal that in this issue of Bazaar, we have chosen to focus on ‘the new changemakers’, the women reshaping the way we live now, in a fascinating portfolio of interviews and photography. Each of our chosen subjects is inspirational in her own way, from Maria…

EMILY BLUNT Page 188 Now based in America, our British cover star has featured in films as diverse as The Devil Wears Prada, The Young Victoria and Mary Poppins Returns. As her sequel to A Quiet Place arrives in cinemas, the acclaimed horror film directed by John Krasinski, she talks to Bazaar about working with her husband, cooking Sunday roasts in Brooklyn and not being scared to say no. One woman changing the world is… ‘Malala Yousafzai.’ Three women you would invite to a dinner party ‘Ella Fitzgerald – she’s my favourite singer of all time; Meryl Streep, because she’s a great conversationalist; and Elizabeth I.’ Your childhood heroine ‘My nana, my mum’s mum. She was magical, funny, jolly and creative; a brilliant artist, storyteller and cook.’ A piece of clothing you wish you owned…

10 things we love

1 TECHNO TAILORING Stride into spring with Giorgio Armani’s super-modern, streamlined take on practical daytime dressing. 2 THE PRINT CLASH Too much isn’t enough when it comes to this season’s riotous approach to pattern. 3 THE 1970s SHADES From glam rock to boho, the decade that taste definitely didn’t forget takes another catwalk turn. Oversize sunglasses are your easy way in. 4 THE LIGHTER BRIGHTS Spring’s colour wheel moves from neons to pastels. Keep the look fresh with simple, graphic shapes. 5 THE MINIDRESS Whether sporty or seductive, this Sixties staple is back with a bang. Short and sweet, literally. 6 THE FASHION SAFARI Utility reworked: the multi-pocket jacket may nod to the Seventies, but the latest iteration speaks more of luxury than functionality. 7 THE SHORTS SUIT Get thee to a Stairmaster: City style for spring means daring to show a little…

my moodboard

While leopard print has long been synonymous with Dolce & Gabbana, its appearance on a carpeted runway at the Italian fashion house’s S/S 20 presentation gave a whole new meaning to the word ‘catwalk’. ‘The Sicilian jungle is in our DNA,’ say Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana of their collection. Models opened the show wearing simple safari separates in an elegant khaki palette, followed by crocodile skirt suits, sequined shorts and eye-catching animal and plant prints – from giraffes and zebra to pineapples and heliconia blooms. The playful mood continued with an accessories line featuring embellished orchid earrings and tiny versions of the brand’s Devotion and Sicily bags. ‘It’s a season full of joy, love and positivity,’ say the designers. ‘This is the story we want to tell today.’…

STYLIST’S TIP ‘Contrast textures, styles and colour for maximum impact: team a ruffled dress or skirt with flat boots, while diamanté crimson heels will add piquancy to a sleek suit.’ THE INSPIRATION ‘The swaggering panache of Christy Turlington, as featured in the October 1995 issue of Bazaar.’ LYDIA SLATER Editor-in-chief ‘Lend a touch of splendour to an elegant work wardrobe with silky fabrics in jewel colours and a pair of statement boots.’ PHOTOGRAPHS: PATRICK DEMARCHELIER, IMAXTREE, LUCKY IF SHARP, EMMA HARDY.
