New year, fresh start - a phrase I’ve used many times as a writer and editor, but one that has real meaning for me in 2020. We moved home last November so that my 81-year-old mother could come and live with us. Our new house needs some loving care and attention, plus a small extension - or annexe – before Mum arrives. So, in addition to liaising with architects and builders, I’ve been spending the past few weeks poring over paint charts, kitchen websites and bathroom brochures. The big question in my mind is whether or not I should embrace decorating with colour (there seems to be so much of it around) or stick with my love of all things monochrome. There have been several ‘lampshade’ moments in Naomi Paul’s creative life. But the one that set her on the path to becoming a globally sought-after maker of wondrously sculptural lighting happened when, in order to keep her job at the Royal College of Art, she said she could crochet… and then had to ask her mother to teach her virtually overnight. ‘My mother is a maker and creator who can turn her hand to anything practical.
