sorting and quilting

I’ve been on a mission lately to clean and organize my sewing studio. It’s a huge task—I have so much stuff. Last weekend, we moved the furniture around a bit so my floor space feels bigger. It’s the same amount of space; it’s just a nice-sized square instead of being a long, skinny rectangle. I’ve sorted through books and tools and given the excess to a new quilter in my neighborhood. Now, I’ve moved on to clearing out the fabric. And I can’t just get rid of it. Why do I find it so difficult to give away fabric?? I’m too frugal (cheap) to do that. So I’m working madly at sewing scrappy projects. I’m looking at every pattern I see and thinking, can I make that with fabric I already have? I’ve not been…

quilter to quilter

• your photos • ideas • stories This page is usually a place where we share photos of our readers quilts, ones they made with patterns from McCall’s Quilting. But we recently received a message from a podcast listener we’d like to share with you. On the podcast, Lori talked about a quilt her sister made for her surfer son featuring jellyfish fabric. Lori explained that she quilted the quilt with an edge-to-edge jellyfish design. Then Tracy added her story about being at an event surrounded by award-winning quilters and making a wall hanging of a Japanese floral arrangement with circles of tulle. The circles reminded her of jellyfish and she decided if she made jellyfish, she wouldn't be competing with those other quiltmakers in the room. Here is the first email from our listener. Hello, I really enjoy…

Anissa Arnold Managing Editor Hocuspocusville, designed by Meg Hawkey of Crabapple Hill Studio, is one of my favorite quilts. I loved embroidering all of the haunted shops. Denise Starck Editorial Director I made Ghoulish Fantasy by Pine Tree Lodge Designs in 2001. It’s probably my only Halloween quilt, but I do love it. I made this wall hanging in a class at my local quilt store with my good friend Lisa, early on in our quilting journey. The cattail is dimensional, and the spider web was created using dissolvable stabilizer. I cut off the ring part of a plastic spider ring and added it just for fun. It makes me smile to look at it! Tracy Mooney Editor I love teaching kids to make pillowcases. I think once they master sewing in a straight line, it’s a quick…
