the calm before the storm

This is a peculiar time of year. On the surface it looks like motorcycling is going into hibernation – across the country bikes are being cleaned and prepped for winter, boots polished, and instructions dug out to see how you’re supposed to wash that waterproof jacket again (Can it go in the machine? Do you need to iron it to reactivate the waterproofing?). For some, this is the time to pack it in for the cold months, while others keep going all-year round. Even for the winter riders, everything slows down a bit – you don’t gas out of a corner covered in leaves with the same enthusiasm you did a couple of months ago. Judge Dredd was fighting crime on his Lawmaster bike two decades ago! On the upside though, the awesomeness of new motorbikes continues apace. We’ve got a cracking crop of crazy cycles heading our way this year – and here’s our pick of the best. Yes – it’s the MSL top 20 must-see machines of 2020 SUZUKI V-STROM 1050/1050 XT Suzuki’s venerable 1,000cc adventure bike has long been a bit of a dark horse in this class. Okay, it’s not got the profile and high tech of something like the BMW R1200GS, and it’s down on sportsbike-style performance compared with Ducati’s Multistrada. But with…

honda cmx500 rebel

Honda’s evergreen A2 licence-friendly CB500 twin motor gets another run out for 2020, this time in custom CMX500 Rebel form. It’s been updated with a new Euro5 compliant 471cc engine, revised seat and suspension settings, and new all-LED lighting. The LCD dash now features a gear position indicator readout, there’s a new slipper clutch, and the seat is re-designed for more comfort. Honda’s focussing on the bobber-type styling, and underlined that with a new ‘S’ version. That comes with factory-fit accessories: headlight cowl, smoked flyscreen, fork gaiters and a diamond-stitch seat. Power sticks at 45bhp, kerb weight is a manageable 191kg, and the seat height is super-low at just 690mm. Colour options are matt jeans blue, black, grey, or red.…

ducati v4s streetfighter

An unfaired bike with 208bhp? Aerodynamic wings? Superbike-spec brakes and suspension? Are they mental? Well, yes, actually, we have to consider the possibility that they are. Ducati’s basically taken the engine and chassis from its incredible Panigale V4 1,103cc superbike, and transmogrified it into the craziest naked bike out there – the new V4 Streetfighter. The foundations should be familiar by now: the Desmosedici Stradale engine, based on the V4 design used in MotoGP and the limited-edition road-going Desmosedici. It’s got a huge 81mm bore and super-short stroke, plus sky-high compression ratio, giving it massive power potential in faired superbike form. Here though, it’s had a slight retune to make it more suitable for the naked form. Unlike many naked bike tweaks though, this one is arguably even crazier than the original.…

Arguably the first of the current crop of deranged hyper-nakeds, KTM’s Super Duke has been dropping jaws since 2014, with a heady mix of super-strong engine performance, lightweight chassis and solid running gear. It’s a buzzing, adrenaline-filled piece of moto-madness, and if you’ve never slung a leg over one, you owe it to yourself to have a test ride. It’s probably no surprise then that we’re getting more – much more – of the same for 2020. At first glance, the new bike looks not unlike the current model: there’s a similar angular bodywork design, there’s a lot of orange, and it looks like it’s doing 150mph parked on the sidestand.
