how generosity bloomed

The event is so revered in Naples that the full name isn’t required. It’s simply known as Hats. When I joined Naples Illustrated last fall, I hadn’t even learned how to operate my office chair when I was given my millinery marching orders: You’ll need to be at Hats. And you’ll need to be wearing one. Festooned with a fascinator and sporting a red dress to reflect the Rubies and Roses theme, my first foray into the Naples social scene—Hats in the Garden—is widely considered to mark the beginning of season. Many part-time Naples residents, I’m told, who winter here starting in January, will fly in just for Hats and then head back north until after the holidays. Georgia native and lifestyle virtuoso James Farmer describes his aesthetic as “unapologetically Southern.” “Whether in design, cooking, day-to-day life, or entertaining, I hope my Southern roots are always reflected,” says Farmer, whose popular books range from A Time to Plant: Southern-Style Garden Living in 2011 to his most recent title, A Place to Call Home: Timeless Southern Charm. “I may serve Lay’s potato chips at a dinner party, but I’d probably serve them out of a Waterford dish with a sterling scoop! I love to mix time periods and styles, which is what I believe makes life or a design unique and cherished.” The affable designer—think Martha Stewart with a drawl—will speak March 11 at Naples Tables, a luncheon of lavish place settings and such, to benefit The League Club’s Community Trust…

1 Paddy Murphy’s: Two Irish exiles, Johnny McNaboe (of County Cavan) and Michael O’ Regan (of Kerry), opened this fixture of Fifth Avenue South in 1998. The decor features mahogany and bar rails imported from the old country for authenticity, and the beer list boasts Guinness, Harp, and Smithwicks (from Ireland’s oldest brewery, located on the grounds of St. Francis’ Abbey). The menu is studded with comfort food such as meatballs, burgers, and fish and chips. There’s live Irish music five nights each week, and Paddy Murphy’s “celebrates every day like it’s St. Patrick’s Day.” (paddymurphys.com) 2 Shea’s at Lansdowne Street: You don’t have to be a Red Sox fan to enjoy your visit here, but it helps. Named for a street near Fenway Park, this successful branch of the original…
