“it’s still finding ways to break new ground”

World of Warcraft is more than just an institution – after over one and a half decades of enduring popularity, it’s practically PC gaming bedrock at this point. Which makes it all the more amazing that it’s still finding ways to break new ground. In fact, it’s breaking reality itself this year. While players may have died countless times over the course of their adventures, the Shadowlandsexpansion marks the first time they’ll be able to storm the very heavens – and hells – themselves. Join us as we go behind the scenes to find out how the worlds of the dead are breathing new life into an MMO that refuses to fade away. ROBIN VALENTINE Specialist in Heavenly writing and hellish opinions. Twitter @robinlvalentine This month Received a vision of the true afterlife. It’s mostly queueing.…

epic showdown

Epic Games is on the warpath. After introducing a payment system into Fortnite’s iOS version that bypassed Apple and its 30 percent fee, the battle royale was booted off the App Store. But Epic was prepared with a lawsuit, along with an in-game parody of a classic Apple advert. The same thing played out on the Google Play Store, followed by another lawsuit. The lawsuit against Apple begins by pointing out that same 1984 ad, which it says “cast Apple as a beneficial, revolutionary force breaking IBM’s monopoly over the computing technology market”. Now, however, “Apple has become what it once railed against: the behemoth seeking to control markets, block competition, and stifle innovation.” EPIC IS FIGHTING TO KEEP ACCESS TO ITS DEVELOPMENT ACCOUNTS Specifically, the lawsuit accuses Apple of using “anti-competitive restraints…

the spy

The Spy has never made a mistake. You’re dubious, of course, but consider: if The Spy had made a mistake – and The Spy assures you The Spy definitely has not – how would you even know? This is the benefit of anonymity. While The Spy’s greatest triumphs will forever go unsung, The Spy can at least take comfort in the knowledge that The Spy’s most embarrassing failures will never be known. Except The Spy can’t, because, as should be clear by now, The Spy has never screwed up. Not once has The Spy spilled truth serum into a mug of tea and spent hours revealing The Spy’s darkest secrets to the person The Spy was supposed to be interrogating. And The Spy always knows which of The Spy’s pens is…

this month in… 2010

1 Before the critical acclaim, the backlash, the backlash to the backlash, and the nuanced, albeit oft-critical reappraisal, Craig Pearson gets an early look at Irrational’s follow-up to their underwater immersive sim. Notably, this version is almost nothing like the game as was released, because BioShock Infinite’s development process was clearly wild. 2 Reviews focused on solid, albeit unremarkable fare. Puzzle Quest 2! F1 2011! Ruse! Just be glad that, despite the fuck-show that is 2020, we’ve got Crusader Kings III. 3 In 2018, a rumour went around that someone had shit in a bag while waiting in line at Gamescom’s Fortnite stand. The fact it wasn’t true is beside the point. The fact people thought it could be true says everything you need to know about Gamescom. This issue’s Special Report…
