CAPITALISM IS PREDICTABLE. Think, for example, of the process by which dangerous technologies are introduced, then become widespread. Think of pesticides, bovine growth hormone, genetically modified organisms, nanotechnology, nuclear power, cyanide heap-leaching, and so on.
First, the dangerous technology is proposed. Actually, I’ve got that wrong. First, the miraculous technology is proposed. It is, without a doubt, a brilliant technical solution to some earth-shattering problem (and also, unsurprisingly, a way for some people to make a lot of money). Then a few losers and malcontents complain that the technology will be harmful, mainly because they’re luddites who hate technology and thus hate humanity.
