I know what it’s like to grow up in a place where you feel like nobody really hears you. I grew up in a small town outside Memphis, and when I was in third or fourth grade the music program at my public school got cut. So I had to go outside of school to seek music. Since 2000 there has been a special place in Memphis called the Stax Music Academy. It’s a non-profit after-school and summer music education program for kids and teens and part of the Soulsville Foundation. In August I teamed up with Levi’s Music Project to surprise students at Stax with a two-day songwriting and performance workshop.
