IT LOOKS LIKE I’VE REACHED another milestone—after 10 years of editing QUILTING ARTS, it is time to de-stash some of the overflowing “stuff” in my workspace. Clearing out the piles of paper and fiber clutter eventually led me to rearrange my magazine storage. (I’m a throwback of sorts—I have kept every print issue of QUILTING ARTS from day one, despite also downloading the digital copies.) There is something soothing about knowing each title is in its place and easy to find. As I re-shelved the issues in numerical order on a single shelf, it reminded me of conversations I’ve had with my friend Ben. Ana Buzzalino is a fiber and mixed-media artist, surface designer, teacher, and lecturer. Her love of layers and texture combine in her original work. She achieves results using a combination of monoprinting, hand-painting, free-motion stitching, and hand-stitching among other techniques. Her work has won numerous awards at national and international shows. judith Quinn Garnett’s latest work is mostly abstract, in bold colors, and focuses on line, shape, texture, and geometry. It starts with canvas painted with fluid acrylics and latex paint that is cut apart and sewn back together, and then painted and stitched once again. Some of her work features non-typical materials—repurposed and recycled elements like coffee bags and packaging, industrial waste and metal bits—pushing the boundaries of the definition of an art quilt. every home studio space has its own personality, and Nanette Zeller’s is no exception. Some studios fill enormous spaces and are central to the living area, but not Nanette’s. It is a sanctuary, tucked away from the main part of the house, filled with light, and decorated with inspiration from nature. plaids are grids that can be manipulated into wildly fun pieced fabric units. To get you started on your own plaid journey, I have created stitching instructions for making a large square—17"—of plaid fabric. You can use your pieced plaids as quilt blocks or you can cut them up as you would regular quilt fabric. MATERIALS Makes 1 plaid block approximately 17" × 17". NOTE: You will need 7 fabrics. Fabrics #1, 2, 4, and 6 are solids, fabrics #3 and 5 are narrow stripes, and fabric #7 is a stripe or geometric (I used a circular print).
