The Best of TV The Bob Newhart Show made the list [“The 100 Greatest TV Shows,” RS 1271]. Though a hit, I always thought it was very underrated. Along with Seinfeld, it’s the best example of how to translate a comedian’s style to television. Guy Rusiski, Pittsburgh to see Deadwood up there, but I’ve scanned it three times now, and there is a big glaring error: No Frasier! Are you kidding me? 1. Rolling Stones “Just Your Fool” This version of Little Walter’s 1960 stomper – from the Stones’ forthcoming blues covers LP, Blue & Lonesome – sounds like hungry kids cutting loose in a basement. IMick Jagger, who coined the phrase “Coachella for old people” last spring to describe Desert Trip, cracked the first jokes about aging rock stars from the stage, during the Rolling Stones’ opening-night set on October 7th. The singer dubbed the festival – six of rock’s biggest still-working legends of the Sixties and Seventies – “the Palm Springs retirement home for genteel English musicians.” Then Jagger asked if anyone remembered “the late Eighties” before the Stones jumped into “Mixed Emotions,” from 1989’s Steel Wheels. The Replacements The first album of theirs I heard was [1983’s] Hootenanny, and I got every album after that. I love the combination of really good songwriting and their endearing, amateurish quality to the way they did stuff. I just read a great biography of them called Trouble Boys, by Bob Mehr. It’s a cool book, but it’s also a sad book, because they all had their own demons from how they came up. I was listening to “Bastards of Young” the other day.
