Ain’t nothing like the real thing ‘La sfumatura di un’esperienza reale’ was the topic of conversation over a morning coffee in Milan recently with Mr Claudio Luti (president of Salone del Mobile and Kartell boss) and Wallpaper’s newly appointed Milan editor Marco Sammicheli. The phrase roughly translates as ‘the nuance of a real experience’ – as in the emotional and physical effect of seeing design first hand, rather than superficially through a screen. We discussed the importance of Salone, and of making the effort to physically engage with design, to experience it fully. The fair’s creativity and energy are positively buzzing, and its growing visitor numbers (almost half a million are reported to have made the effort last year) affirm its position in the global design community. Ceramic has been the material of the moment for some time, but its place in the limelight is about to be shared as glassware makes a welcome return. Lighting brands will be flocking to Salone’s Euroluce event and, in the case of Bocci, perfectly spherical lampshades have been exchanged for natural forms to create an otherworldly sight. Elsewhere in Milan, Norwegian Presence gathers beautiful examples of Scandinavian craft, including the colourful work of glass blower Erik Wester, while Turkish glass brand Nude presents Space Copenhagen’s ‘Silhouette’ series, which plays on classic, almost ancient motifs. It’s estimated that an average denim supplier wastes 380,000 gallons of water every day in its manufacturing processes. US denim brand ag is taking steps to plug the leak, installing state-of-the art equipment in its LA and Mexico factories to ensure that 100 per cent of its water is recycled during production. Now, only 1,200 gallons of water per day are lost due to evaporation or spillage. The label has also made a celebratory splash with an accompanying water-inspired capsule collection, in collaboration with the American-based Swiss artist Blanda. Off-white, canvas-inspired denim pieces are illustrated with abstract human images. ‘Woven into these entangled figures are elements representing water,’ says Blanda. ‘Water is the starting point of this collection, but it’s also the basis of life itself.’…

When planning Cruquius, a new city-within-a-city on a derelict wharf on Amsterdam’s eastern waterfront, the Dutch real estate firm Amvest knew it would require an architecturally distinctive landmark. So it built its new headquarters there. Designed by the New York-based Rietveld Architects, the striking glass and steel structure cantilevers over the harbour, while inside, a plant-filled, glass-walled lobby doubles as a lift, ascending majestically up to the double-height main floor where everyone works, and to event spaces and conference rooms on a mezzanine floor above. Meanwhile, staffers travel swiftly between floors by way of a pair of wide, intertwining staircases, encased within a quadruple layer of clear, fire-rated glass. Being on the water with so much glass might have made for a glare-filled, overheated workspace, but Rietveld Architects inserted chainmail…

Martin Eisler’s ‘Reversible’ chair has been a discreet icon of midcentury Brazilian design since its launch in 1955, though arguably known only by dedicated followers of the movement. The Viennese-born Eisler moved to Buenos Aires in 1938, later re-establishing himself in São Paulo after meeting fellow designer Carlo Hauner and joining his company Forma as a partner. The pair produced a number of designs that have since become synonymous with Brazil’s modernist scene. At this year’s Salone del Mobile, Italian brand Tacchini plans to showcase Brazilian design in all its glory – immersing visitors within an exhibition space inspired by the Casa Rampa in São Paulo, designed by architect Marcio Kogan. New designs will sit alongside reissues of existing pieces, including the ‘Reversible’ chair, with its movable seat that swings…
