editor’s note

Why rare? Well, because if there is one word to define showbiz, apart from glamorous and magical, that would be blasé. Nothing really surprises in this world. Everyone is almost too pretty, too troubled, too talented, too driven, or too crazy. Given that, we expect trouble, and no one disappoints. As we ride their extremes of highs and lows and back again, we lap it all up as a fun ride. Somehow, when it’s beautiful people who mess with us—whether it’s to stun us with their brilliance onscreen or blunders off it—we just love to watch. After a while, we get so used to all the stingers, we actually end up pretty blasé. Then comes AlDub. Suddenly, we are surprised. This kind of chemistry hasn’t hit the scene since Guy & Pip,…

alden & maine

At the launch of the 2015 edition of the YES! List of 100 Most Beautiful Stars (MBS), Alden Richards was conspicuously absent. The launch is an annual event that unveils the cover star or stars of the magazine’s special issue, as well as the rest of the stars on the coveted list. On July 27, 2015, the launch was integrated into YES! Magazine’s 15th anniversary celebration, held at the Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria hotel at Ortigas Center, Quezon City. The GMA homegrown artist had been attending the MBS launch since he was included in the list in 2011. That was the year he scored his first major role, in the daytime soap Alakdana. In 2013, he missed the program proper because of a prior engagement, but he managed to make it before…

jc de vera

JC de Vera knows what it’s like to wait for his turn. Since he started in showbiz in 2003, he has moved from GMA, to TV5, to his current home network, ABS-CBN. Recently he starred in the hit TV series You’re My Home, where a pair-up with actress Jessy Mendiola spawned a new love team. Now the two are set to do more projects together. His career is going at a steady, quickening pace—and whatever he has accomplished so far has been earned and deserved. In an article in PEP.ph, he was quoted as saying: “Although ako ’yong taong marami akong plans, gumagawa ako ng plans kasi ako ’yong goal-driven talaga.Very strict ako sa plans ko. Nasa stage ako talaga na nagbi-build ako ng pangfuture ko.” The 30-year-old actor added: “Kasi, sabi…

rocco nacino

Rocco Nacino hasn’t even turned 30 yet, but he has achieved what many of his peers still long for in their career: he is called by critics and contemporaries an actor, with a capital “A.” And he isn’t called that just because he appears on TV or in movies, or because he calls himself that. The word is attached to him because, mind you, he tackles characters with depth and with an artistic mind. “Acting has become deeper actually, as time passes by,” he tells us. “It becomes an art and you look forward to trying out different roles and exploring different emotions. I’m still not perfect at this craft, and it’s a never-ending process of learning. I’ve become more excited and passionate about my roles as I mature in the…

ken chan

GMA broke new ground with its daytime soap about a transwoman, Destiny Rose, which ran from September 2015 to March 2016. The Kapuso network also took a big risk in casting a newbie, Ken Chan, in the title role. The soap rated well, and it made a star out of the 21-year-old Chinoy actorsinger, who had previously appeared as one part of a love triangle in the teledrama Tween Hearts and as co-host of the late-night show Walang Tulugan with the Master Showman. In Destiny Rose, with the aid of makeup and styling, Ken was beautifully transformed into a woman. But in the end it was his earnest approach to acting that turned him into the character that audiences fell in love with and rooted for. Now he’s leveling up: “Hindi ako…

tom rodriguez

Apart from being thankful and feeling blessed, Tom Rodriguez is soaking in all the lessons he’s picking up from all his projects. The 28-year-old Fil-Am actor has done a number of comedies and chick flicks, but the audience saw a different Tom when he played the title role, as Senator Juancho Magtanggol Jr., in the indie film Magtanggol, directed by Sigfreid Barros Sanchez. “I was very happy with the results of the film,” Tom says. “I learned so much from everyone I worked with there.” For TV, after reprising the character of Sergio Santibañez in the 2015 Pinoy remake of the Mexican telenovela MariMar, the Kapuso hunk already has a new project lined up. Though he’s not yet in a position to divulge what it’s about, he says the role he plays…
