For children with autism, SPD, and other sensoiy challenges, movement & pressure on joints & muscles in the form of heavy work activities or massage will help keep the nervous system calm and organized for several hours. This activity will help integrate both the proprioceptive and the tactile senses. It wall encourage expressive communication and focus. In addition, it will help in sequencing skills. DIRECTIONS To begin, provide each student with a helmet template (copied on cardstocK). Invite your children to use crayons or colored pencils to design and decorate their perfect football helmet. When finished, instruct them to cut it out, Model how to use strips of tin foil to cover the face guard. This can easily be done by placing helmet face down on top of the foil and tracing around the outside of the face guard (a super savvy 7th grader figured this one out for me). In small groups, provide each student with a set of helmet and number word cards. you also may choose to give your Kiddos a set of tally cards.
