Dear Friends, When I start working on a new issue of Art Quilting Studio, one of my favorite tasks is reading through the articles our contributors have written and finding out more about their inspiration, artwork, and passions. It’s a small window into their lives, and I am able to discover and understand so much more about art quilts. It never fails — each issue teaches me something new, whether a technique, nugget of truth, or fun fact. It’s a great perk of editing and putting the pages together. My love for national parks began as a child hearing about my dad’s college job at Mesa Verde, and it was cemented by a camping trip to Seattle from Albuquerque via Lassen, Crater Lake, Redwood, and the iconic Mount Rainier National Parks. Camping turned out to be a hardship for my mother, but I loved it and have spent several decades camping in the parks with my children, friends, and grandchildren. A call for entry by Studio Art Quilt Associates titled Textile Posters prompted me to start designing quilts with a graphic look in the style of the historic WPA posters of the 1930s. These three works are part of a series titled Black Crowns. This is a series of artwork exploring the intricacies, complexities, and beauty of African American hair. In the process of making this series of works, I’ve begun to re-examine the concept of feminine beauty standards. What are these standards? Why do we need them? Do beauty standards exclude entire groups of people because of natural traits, like body shape, hair type, or height? As a society, do we create negative narratives as related to body image because of these standards? I believe that creativity is more a combination of old things than the quest for novel, never before seen or heard of ideas. Nearly all of my work is based on my original photos, and I loved the photo on which this piece is based, taken of the bell tower on the campus of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I did my master’s degree there and both my daughters have also attended, so it holds a special place in my heart. The biggest challenge with trying to duplicate this photo in a quilt was its intricacy.
