In 1959, songwriter Berry Gordy Jr. purchased a two-family house on West Grand Boulevard in Detroit, Michigan. Gordy lived in the upper portion with his wife and son, while the lower section was used to start his record label, Motown Record Corporation, originally called Tamla Records. Gordy converted the garage into a recording studio, soon to be known as Hitsville U.S.A.’s Studio A. His knack as a producer and pioneering entrepreneur paved the way for a new wave of music that would soon sweep the nation. Nearly 60 years ago, Donald H. Holden, a doctor, and his wife, Vivian, a swim cap designer for Jantzen, commissioned John Storrs to design a home for their family just outside of Portland. The Holdens lived in the home for 40 years before selling to a developer who originally intended to raze the home but instead decided to upgrade it to meet the tastes of early 2000s homebuyers. The improvements included tearing out the original custom cabinetry in the kitchen and replacing it with Craftsman-style cherry wood cabinetry. It’s never too late to chase your mid century vision. With their two boys grown up, Matt and Susie Bailey felt it was time to make their dream of owning a mid century house a reality. Susie, a retired aesthetician, and Matt, an investor and Adjunct Professor of Business at the University of California, Irvine, had long admired mid century homes, especially a friend’s Eichler abode. Matt and Susie explored Santa Ana’s Floral Park, one of Orange County’s oldest neighborhoods. After sifting through century-old homes, they spotted it—a 2,100-square-foot stunner built in 1950 and brimming with possibilities.
