1 Check the churchyard trees for roving flocks of tits which may include Goldcrest, Treecreeper, Great Spotted Woodpecker and, perhaps, a wintering Blackcap or Chiffchaff. Adjacent fields and hedgerows attract Stonechat, Redwing, Fieldfare, Goldfinch, Bullfinch, Linnet and flocks of gulls, Starlings and corvids.
2 Scan along the fleet for wildfowl such as Shelduck, Wigeon, Goldeneye, Red-breasted Merganser and Brent Goose, plus Great Crested, Little and Black-necked Grebes and maybe a Pintail. Check the margins for waders, typically Curlew, Oystercatcher, Redshank, Turnstone, Ringed and Grey Plovers, Dunlin and Bar-tailed Godwit, plus Little Egret and Grey Heron. Gull flocks on the fleet often harbour Mediterranean, Yellow-legged and Caspian Gulls. Peregrine and Merlin hunt here and Black Redstart winter.
3 Open arable farmland supports Kestrel, Buzzard, partridges, Stock Dove, corvids, wagtails, buntings, sparrows…
