I came to encaustic from a mixed-media background. Collage, watercolor, acrylics, bookmaking, jewelry, clay . . . I was enjoying it all. Out of curiosity, I took an encaustic workshop and have been in love with this medium ever since. The beauty of encaustic seduced me, with its luminous glow, mysterious layered depth, and exquisite surface quality. I soon discovered how extremely versatile encaustic is. Encaustic artwork can be smooth, textured, opaque, transparent, abstract, representational, two- or three-dimensional, large or small. And because it’s wax, you can scrape, cast, carve, pour, gouge, stamp, collage, transfer imagery, stencil it, and more. Its adhesive quality allows for adhering various items. It is the ultimate mixed-media unifier.
Let me share with you what encaustic is, what supplies are needed, and address some safety…
