WHEN ANDREW LINDNER’S PARENTS set up a sock factory in Goulburn in 1988, they were continuing a family tradition that had begun over 100 years ago. Andrew’s great-grandfather, Max, and his wife, Meta, founded H. Max Lindner Strumpf Fabrik in Germany in 1921 and the business continued to go from strength to strength, passing down through generations of the Lindner family.
But following the 1986 nuclear disaster in Chernobyl, Andrew’s father, Wilfred, was concerned for the safety of his family and decided to split the business with his brother, Reinhard, and start production in Australia with his half of the machines.
