On a Tour de France rest day one year, a colleague of mine was asked by a radio presenter how the riders would be spending their day off. “Will they be practising cycling?” Practise cycling? It’s certainly not how it’s usually put, nor are there many skills that you could sharpen up in the space of 24 hours, like you could in, say, a cricket nets session. Yet, honing our technique is an underrated aspect of cycling that, when worked on over the longterm, can enhance our enjoyment of the sport. On p40, Mark Bailey explores the weaknesses – in descending, riding in a peloton, no-handed riding and more – that pro riders have turned into strengths.
