COAT CAPTURE Catch jackets, bags, and backpacks as soon as you come inside with an easy-to-craft coatrack sized to suit your front door. It costs about $45 to make—even less if your toolbox is well-stocked. Cut a 1×4 board to the desired length to fit your door. Use painters tape to create crisp lines, and paint each section; let dry thoroughly between colors. Drill pilot holes into the board with a countersink bit. Drill corresponding pilot holes into the door, then screw the board to the door. 16 HOME IMPROVEMENT HACKS! RUBBER BANDS TO THE RESCUE Those pesky stripped screws are beasts to remove. Traction and tension are nearly impossible if the head of the screw is all mangled. Try this trick, courtesy of a trusty office supply: Place a wide rubber band between the screw head and the screwdriver, then unscrew slowly and carefully. The rubber band provides just the right amount of fill to get the screw moving. I CAN SEE CLEARLY NOW Look, I’ll admit it: Washing windows isn’t my favorite task. ANNUAL VINES HYACINTH BEAN is a longblooming and easy-to-grow vine that will decorate a trellis with flowers until the first frost in fall. MORNING GLORY unfurls its circular blossoms when the sun comes up and then closes them in the heat of the day. Soak seeds over night before planting to soften their hard seed coats. SWEET PEAS are prized for their fragrance, and the blossoms make wonderful cut flowers. Plant seeds in early spring and enjoy blossoms in early summer. 1 MADE FOR SHADE Long stitches refresh a tired lampshade. Punch holes close together along the top and bottom edges and in 6-inch vertical sections through the center around the shade. Stitch light gray vertical background lines with yarn, then use dark gray yarn to stitch from the bottom half of one line to the top half of the next to create a zigzag, opposite. Switch colors and direction of stitches. 2 X FILES Shades of pink, coral, and gold create an ombré effect on this pillow. Plot a design on graph paper (we planned for ½-inchwide cross-stitches), poke a hole in the center of each X, then lay the paper on a purchased pillow cover with a loose weave. How to Make a Tire Table MATERIALS • Two same-size tires (clean and dry) • Two unfinished wooden tabletop rounds (large enough to cover tire openings) • Drill with ¼-inch bit • Eight bolts (at least 3 inches long) and nuts • 36×45-inch natural-color cotton batting • Staple gun and ½-inch staples • 50 yards 1-inch-thick cotton cording (We used Wrights.) • Hot-glue gun and glue sticks • Cloth tape • Glass round (diameter slightly smaller than tires) Step 1 Gather supplies (A). Drill four evenly spaced holes around one tabletop 1 inch from the edge. Place the tabletop on a tire and drill through each hole into tire wall. Secure tabletop to tire with bolts and nuts (B). KNOCKOFF KNOB Achieve a high-end look for much less by swapping existing knobs with this DIY version. Select agates that are wider than inexpensive knobs with flat surfaces. The slick surfaces require a high-strength adhesive that can bond metal and stone. We used Loctite Epoxy Quick Set, which combines epoxy resin and a hardener before application. ROLLING UP Make your own wheel trellis by gathering four to six bicycle wheels in various sizes. Check with your local recycling or salvage center for lowor no-cost wheels. Coat the rims and tires with spray paint for a pop of color. Let dry. Arrange the wheels in a rough rectangular shape so each wheel is touching at least two other wheels. Attach the wheels to each other at their points of contact by drilling holes and securing hex-head bolts, washers, lock washers, and nuts, opposite and above. HERRINGBONE PANEL WALL “The mood in this room is nothing short of inspiring,” Lindsay Ballard says of the panel wall in her home office. To get the look, calculate the number of planks needed to make a herringbone pattern on your wall; divide planks into three equal piles. Wipe on wood conditioner with a lint-free cloth. Let sit for 15 minutes; remove excess. Stain each pile a different shade of brown; let dry. Find the wall’s center point and draw a 45-degree angle with a framing square and a level.
