With little recent rain having fallen in the Amathole District Municipality, farmers and residents in the area are concerned that the Xilinxa Dam and smaller dams will dry up completely.
In mid-January, the Xilinxa was 2,8% full, and this figure has since dropped to less than 2%. The dam supplies Butterworth, Kotana, Ehlobo, and smaller villages between Butterworth and Centane.
Dams in Mnquma, Butterworth, Tolweni, Nqamakwe, Mabashe, Dutywa and Raymond Mhlaba, and particularly Bedford and Adelaide, are all less than 10% full, said Siyabulela Makunga, spokesperson for the Amathole District Municipality.
“The dams are very small and if substantial rain does not fall soon, they will run completely dry in the next two months,” he added.
