Sugar producers in France, including Tereos, Saint-Louis and Cristal Union, have asked sugar beet farmers to increase their output by about 20%, according to Bloomberg News.
This is due to restrictions that have capped European Union (EU) sugar output since 2006 being lifted by October this year. With these removed, EU output could reach 20 million tons, an increase of about 20%, according to Rabobank International.
French producers expect to add about one million tons to their annual production of 4,5 million tons, while domestic demand could increase to three million tons, driving producers to seek export markets outside the EU, the Bloomberg report said.
French producers would be targeting markets in the UK, Spain, Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, Italy, as well as Africa and Central Asia.
