The Department of Water and Sanitation’s Weekly State of Reservoirs report released recently, said the average reservoir level of dams was 11% lower than this time last year.
Overall, reservoirs were at acceptable levels – Eastern Cape at 79,2%, Free State 69,7%, Gauteng 85%, KZN 59,9%, Limpopo 73,4%, Mpumalanga 72,7%, Northern Cape 75,3%, North West 56,6% and Western Cape 71,8%. South Africa’s total capacity of 32,1 billion cubic metres was currently at 21,9 billion cubic metres, which was 10,2 billion cubic metres under capacity.
Except for Pongolapoort Dam ( 53,9%), and the Vaal Dam (57,8%, down from 59,2% last year), other major dams were at acceptable levels – 98% for the Sterkfontein Dam, 61,3% for the Gariep Dam and 93,8% for the Vanderkloof Dam.…
