The man who would give us Jock of the Bushveld was born in King William’s Town on 24 July, 1862, the eldest son of James FitzPatrick, a Supreme Court judge, and Jennifer (neé FitzGerald), both from Ireland. Christened ‘James Peter’, he was always known as Fitz or Percy by his own choice.
His early education commenced at Downside School near Bath in Somerset, England, and ended at St Aidan’s College in Grahamstown. The outdoor-loving youngster was keen on swimming, cricket, tennis and boxing, and believed from an early age that life should be enjoyed to the full. By the age of 17, FitzPatrick had grown into a strong young man with a ready wit.
