A New Zealand farmer has set a new world record for a wheat yield of nearly 16,8t/ha. Eric Watson, harvested the 11ha field of UK-bred Oakley winter wheat to achieve the record yield, Farmers Weekly in the UK reported. This broke the previous record of 16,5t/ha held by UK grower, Rod Smith, since 2015.
“The record-breaking wheat crop was lightly irrigated, with only two applications. This puts the accomplishment into perspective given that on average, irrigated wheat yields in New Zealand were 12t/ha,” the article noted.
