In this article, the first in a two-part series, we look at a story that detailed an investigation into the effects of the crossbreeding of poultry breeds on factors such as egg production and feed utilisation, among others.
Egg production, egg weight, feed utilisation, and the mortality rate of fowls are of great economic importance to poultry farmers.
To determine the effect of crossbreeding on these traits, CL Marais, poultry officer at the [then] Agricultural Research Institute in Potchefstroom, has carried out an investigation.
BREEDS INVESTIGATED
