I was born surrounded by banana-trees, in the Canary Islands, and I’ve loved the beauty of nature ever since. Today, my secret garden is behind my home of 40 years in Bath. It is very small, but full of hydrangeas, camellias and David Austin roses, all in neutral shades – mostly white, because that colour brings me peace. While I don’t talk to my plants a great deal, I will occasionally tell a particularly wonderful rose: ‘How beautiful you are!’ I like simple, unpretentious flowers – not wild, but semi-wild – in that classic English style. The formality of French gardens bores me.
Of course, I inevitably sketch shoes inspired by flowers: my Madonna lilies; a nasturtium; or the shape of a fig-tree leaf. But the scent is important, too.…
