TWO of the volunteers who took part in the first-ever Ffestiniog Railway revival working party on October 23, 1954 returned to the line to officially rededicate Welsh Pony following its £250,000-plus overhaul.
On Saturday, October 10, Michael Davies and Robert Smallman boarded a special train from Porthmadog to Blaenau Ffestiniog hauled by the 1867-built large England 0-4-0STT which, since its return to steam for the first time in 80 years, had carried only its fleet number, 5, pending its official naming ceremony. Heading a rake of ornate Victorian carriages, the locomotive had just been outshopped in its stunning new rich, ‘chocolate box’ purple-brown livery, fully lined, lettered and varnished.
