When soap stars depart, they often want to shake off their old persona and move on. But once you’ve been in someone’s living room three, four or five times a week, they will never really forget you. Sid Owen, who played EastEnders’ Ricky Butcher intermittently for nearly 25 years, realises this only too well – but he’s now happy to embrace it, as he embarks on a new soap endeavour...
“It’s been a big part of my life, and it’s no different now from when I was in the show 20 years ago,” he tells us. “I still get recognised – that’s the life of being on soap! I live in France now, though, so people shout ‘Ricardo!’ at me rather than ‘Ricky!’”
